Wondering what this title means in english?
A few months ago it was one of my favourite latin phrases, I even emailed it to my colleagues.
I'm sure if you have stood in front of a class of senior high school students you know that a few of them really don't want to be there. Okay, not unusual for some students I know, but then there's the type that don't want to be there and make life difficult for you. So, to them I quote:
aut disce, aut discede - EITHER LEARN OR LEAVE!
I have said to many parents whose children are failing, they aren't doomed. They just need to find their passion in life.. and from there everything will fall into place for them.
Sounds harsh, perhaps, but sometimes we have to realise that schools aren't always the best place for young people to excel in life. Consider Einstein for a moment. He failed school miserably but made such a monumental contribution to science.
Anything is possible.

perfer et obdura; dolor hic tibi proderit olim
this title means "Be patient and tough, some day this pain will be useful to you"
So far in my short lived teaching career I have formed a hypothesis about teenagers and how they like to learn... THE HARD WAY!
We were all teens once ourselves and probably felt like we knew it all, that we didn't need the olds telling us how do stuff.. does this sound familiar?
We eventually grew up and with age comes experience, good and bad, so we have a bit of wisdom to share with these young ones. Alas, we shake our heads in frustration and ask - WHY don't they listen? Sometimes we need to stroll down memory lane and ask ourselves - Why didn't I listen back then?
Hindsight is always 20/20!
Guess they have to work somethings out for themselves - it's just so hard not to be smug and say "I told you so!"
My modus operandi lately is that if they choose not to follow experienced advice ultimately it's their tough luck. Suck it up, cupcakes!

ab initio (from the beginning..)
Weird name for a blog? Yes, I know.. but I'm not one to follow convention :D
Guess I am a teacher through and through - I like to make people sit up, take notice and think... and, blogs are all about sharing info etc so, literally, my posts are essentially "magistra dixit" i.e. The teacher said it..
I do like to use the odd latin phrase so that will no doubt feature in some of my entries.. along with some noble attempts at humour.
Til next post - God bless
